Faculty of Management and Economics

About

The Faculty of Management and Economics is committed to the ideal of uniting evidence-based research, teaching & transfer and strives to meet high academic standards in both areas. More than 30 professorships, together with foreign universities, support the range of courses offered. Together with the engineering faculties of the Ruhr-Universität, the faculty is also committed to the topic of start-ups and corporate succession. The grouping of the professors into five thematic areas of competence demonstrates the clear profile and clarifies the opportunities for cooperation in research, teaching and transfer within the faculty and externally. In addition, the faculty promotes close networking with business and science on a national and international level in order to strengthen the exchange of ideas and knowledge transfer at all levels.

In teaching, the Faculty of Management and Economics stands for an integrative approach that combines business administration and economics and is widely known as the “Bochum Model”. The range of courses includes the two integrated generalist degree programmes Management & Economics in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. In addition, the faculty offers selected specialised Master’s programmes for the fields of competence, also in the area of continuing education. The different focal points of the fields of competence are also reflected by the specialisations offered. Our degrees are based on a future-oriented and labour market-oriented education and, due to the high level of practical relevance in teaching, optimally qualify students for a quick career entry. The multiple awards for good teaching by the Germany-wide UNICUM election for Professor of the Year (2007,2014, 2018), fellowships for excellent innovative teaching projects in digital teaching from the Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany (2017, 2018) and the placement of the Master’s programme in the top group of the current CHE ranking (2021) reflect the excellence of the faculty in the area of teaching and studies.

The research of the members of the Faculty of Management and Economics also follows the integrative “Bochum Model” of business and economics and is divided into five fields of competence. Methodologically and in terms of content, we cover a broad spectrum, whereby the focus of research in the faculty is on applied, empirical research on entrepreneurially and politically relevant issues. Under the Faculty’s mission statement “Bridging 2030 – Shaping Change Responsibly in Business and Politics”, the fields of competence focus on those aspects of social change in which economic drivers play a decisive role.

Due to our central location in the middle of the Ruhr area, we are an attractive location for people from all parts of Germany and from abroad. For the future, we have set ourselves the goal of further expanding our existing strengths. We are therefore intensifying the transfer within the campus and into practice. We promote top-level research by supporting young scientists and by expanding our international research network. We are strengthening our focus on entrepreneurship and innovation through our involvement in the Worldfactory Start-up Center and a variety of interdisciplinary courses.

The members of the faculty look forward to welcoming you to campus soon to show you the benefits of our faculty in person!
